Distance: 68 miles Colorado/ Kansas border to Scott City, KS

Ride Time: 5:43

Average Speed: 11.9

Altitude Gain: 393 feet

Average Temperature: 98

This morning Kathie took me back to the Colorado/ Kansas border to start at the same place we ended riding yesterday. We entered the central time zone, so there goes another hour of sleep. The difference between eastern Colorado and Kansas have been amazing. Kansas is definitely the breadbasket of the nation. The wheat, corn and beans are beautiful and the fields go as far as the eye can see. There are also oil pumps throughout the area.

I’m sure trees naturally grow sideways here

Riding a bike is so very different than it was further west. In Kansas, if the car coming up behind me cannot see far enough to safely pass, they will slow down until visibility is good enough to pass into the on-coming lane. Most drivers will give me a full lane of clearance as they pass. Even the heavy grain trucks will do the same. There are a lot of trucks taking the grain from the fields to the elevators in a nearby town.

I have been leap-frogging the two boys on their bikes for the past couple of days now.

Hail storm

I have enjoyed watching the farming and harvesting process. I have also became fascinated with wind farms. It was while I was watching the wind mills that Kathie pulled up and said “hop in quick.” A bad storm was coming. As soon as I got the bike in the truck, it hit. The rain drops were at least as big as quarters and the hail hit with such a force as to dent our trailer. The windshield wipers were going at full speed and we still had low visibility. At the rate it was pouring, it didn’t take long to have the roads looking like streams of water.

We have been sleeping very comfortably in our trailer.
