Golden Gate Bridge while on ferry across San Francisco Bay
Alcatraz Island while on ferry
San Francisco from ferry

We have been unable to determine if they will let us bring our bikes on the ferry. We got there early enough to ask and were told we can bring our own bikes with no charge. That was a real blessing as I didn’t see any bike rental shops open. As we entered we were told we must wear masks at all times on the ferry. They didn’t have any for sale there. I ran back to the truck to get our masks. While on the ferry the screen announced that due to the virus all docks were closed except the Vallejo and the Oakland. I began worrying that we wouldn’t even get to San Francisco. As it turns out, those two docks are the only ones going in to San Francisco. Every thing is working out. We started by using a map provided for us on line, but before long we are facing Lombard Street and it really does go almost straight up. We asked for different directions and were told to go down to Ghirardelli Square and follow the waterfront.

Rock Tree in San Francisco

Things seemed to work a lot better after that and we enjoyed the ride over and back on the Golden Gate Bridge. We enjoyed the military branch museum at the other side of the bridge. We backed my bike into the bay to symbolically show we are leaving the Pacific Ocean. We also saw on our way along the water front a tree with some strange rocks for fruit. On the way back to our wharf we found only two restaurants open for take out. So we had oyster chowder on the wharf. San Francisco has well-planned bike paths that seem to protect you from the cars around you.

The ride back on the ferry was relaxing. Kathie took in the scenes of Alcatraz and the bridges.

Stephen Clyde helped me with my get my Garmin and a Chromebook to work together.

It was a fabulous day!
