My Ride Across the USA

Hello, my name is Mark Burtenshaw. I am a recreational cyclist. I find cycling a good release from the pressures of life. I also find it a great way to give myself the exercise my body needs.

A few years ago I came to the cruel realization that I was not going to be winning any bicycle racing competitions. I began searching for ways to combine my interest in cycling and give me a reason to continue training. One of my friends invited me to participate with a small group of cyclists from work in the “Tour de Wyoming.” I found that training with these friends was fun and gave me motivation. I enjoyed the Tour de Wyoming with these friends and their example has been something I have really benefited from.

Eventually I started looking into a long distance tour. My wife, Kathie, said she would be willing in supporting my rides. So I decided to ride through the state of Utah. I planned my route starting in Fredonia, AZ and ending in Franklin, ID. We both had an awesome time doing this ride and learned a lot. This trip became the drive to put together a ride across the USA when I retired.
